Targaryen Family Tree From 'Game of Thrones' and 'House of the Dragon'

After the death of his wife during childbirth, Viserys remarries and has a son with Rhaenyra’s best friend, Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey, then Olivia Cooke). Rhaenyra goes on to have her own children, who stand to inherit her claim. The Targaryen family tree is admittedly complicated—though compact thanks to the family’s penchant for incest.

Rhaegar Targaryen

Basically, King Viserys Targaryen had two wives, Aemma and Alicent Hightower. After Aemma and Baelon died, Viserys named Rhaenyra Targaryen heir to the Iron Throne, and even when he had a son, Aegon, with Alicent, he didn’t change his mind despite the protests of Otto Hightower. Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, were the Targaryens who kicked off the royal dynasty on Westeros. Using their dragons Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes, they forged the Seven Kingdoms (although they failed to conquer Dorne), bringing the land’s current rulers to heel.

Prince Jacaerys Velaryon

Daenys Targaryen, who came to be known as Daenys the Dreamer, had a vision that the city of Valyria—where all the dragonriders once resided—would be consumed in some apocalyptic event. Her father, Aenar, took this vision to heart and moved his entire family out of Valyria to Dragonstone. Daenys’ vision came to pass, and the Targaryens became the last remaining dragonriders in the world.

House of the Dragon Season 2: Cast, plot, premiere date, and everything else we know

Viserys (played by Paddy Considine) is the fifth Targaryen king to rule the Seven Kingdoms, succeeding his grandfather Jaehaerys after being chosen by the Great Council among at least 14 contenders with potential claims. He married his cousin Aemma Arryn at an early age and they have a daughter, Rhaenyra. Viserys’ reign is considered the high-water mark of power for House Targaryen. During his 55 years on the throne, the realm is prosperous, the smallfolk are content, dragons thrive in great numbers, and so does the family. But there’s that pesky looming question of who will inherit the crown, and when Aemma dies and the king remarries Alicent Hightower (told you she’d be back), things start to get testy in the Red Keep. Alicent is the daughter of Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Hand to both King Jaehaerys and King Viserys.

Prince Lucerys Velaryon (Harvey Sadler, then Elliot Grihault)

However, when it comes to the question of succession, he’s fanciful to a fault in his pursuit of a male heir. This leads to him making a horrible decision that results in the death of his first wife, Aemma, and their newborn son. It also leads to him hedging his bets about who his heir should be after he remarries and has more children.

Alicent Hightower

At the beginning of the show, she’s a woman of the court who largely keeps Rhaenyra Targaryen company. But Otto encourages Alicent to comfort King Viserys after his wife’s death and become invaluable to the ruler. Alicent, convinced that Rhaenyra will murder her children in order to secure the Iron Throne, becomes increasingly invested in positioning Aegon II as Viserys’ true heir. A deathbed misunderstanding leads her to push to have her son Aegon crowned as king after her husband, Viserys, dies. As the child of Jaehaerys’ eldest son Aemon, Rhaenys (Eve Best) theoretically should have been the first in line for the throne. But because Westeros is a sexist place, the lords balked at the idea of a woman ruling over them.

Rhaenyra’s marriage to Laenor Velaryon was sort of a given, considering her unique status as a princess and future ruling queen. Only someone with the blood of the dragon would do for her, and Laenor was right there looking like a completely uninterested — I mean, clearly devoted — snack. After the (ahem) tragic death of his first wife Rhea Royce, Daemon Targaryen married Laena Velaryon, the beautiful daughter of his first cousin Rhaenys. Due to Daemon’s um, misbehavior at court, they were forced into exile in Pentos, where they live with their twin daughters and fly around on their cool dragons Caraxes and Vhagar. Of course, the moment everyone gets comfortable with how things work in the Red Keep, House of the Dragon throws a curveball and jumps ahead 10-ish years to when Rhaenyra, Alicent, and Daemon all have children of their own. Just to make sure everyone’s caught up on all the new Targaryens, Velaryons, and other strong (ahem) contenders for our attention, here’s what the family tree looks like as of Episode 6 of House of the Dragon.

By the end of Season 1, she has become queen as her brother Aegon's wife, and she also has given a confirmed prophecy ("the beast beneath the boards" being Rhaenys and her dragon crashing Aegon's coronation"). Rhaenyra's marriage to Laenor ends in Episode 7, when she marries her uncle Daemon after Laenor's "death." The pair welcome two sons together during the six-year time jump before Episode 8. They're still going strong when the realm is thrown into conflict in the Season 1 finale, where she is named the rightful Queen days after her nephew Aegon has usurped the Iron Throne. Rhaenys had a stronger claim to the Iron Throne, as the daughter of Jaehaerys' eldest son, Aemon, and Jocelyn Baratheon (an ancestor of early Thrones king Robert Baratheon).

Viserys pressures Viserys into marrying Leana while she is still a child, but Viserys instead marries Alicent Hightower. Still, the two Velaryon children will be important allies to many Targaryens in the future of the show. (To be fair, it’s pronounced “ennis.”) But he overcame this to become a gentle ruler, until his brother murdered him in cold blood. He married Alyssa Velaryon, a descendant of the only other Valyrian family to have survived the city’s demise—though Velaryons are not Dragonriders.

Daenerys would have been the 18th, and the first Targaryen queen, but we know how that turned out. King Viserys knows that with no living male heirs (at least not at this point in his life), the crown will likely pass to Daemon if he doesn’t do something about it while he still can. Rather than see his short-tempered, impulsive brother take on a role he’s not at all suited for, Viserys surprises everyone by naming his daughter Rhaenyra (played by Milly Alcock) as his successor. It’s a divisive move that he may come to regret later, but it’s a step toward progress for the women of Westeros. It’s also the closest the Targaryens will ever come to having a queen sit on the Iron Throne.

As the second-born son of Daeron, Aerys was the very definition of the spare, and when his elder brother had not one but two sons, Princes Valarr and Matarys, the idea of him taking the throne seemed laughable. Inevitably, Aegon IV eventually passed away, his swollen body literally rotting from the inside out as if the moral corruption had infected his own flesh. With Aegon dead, Daeron ascended to the throne and became Daeron II Targaryen, but the unworthy king played one final trick on his son.

She is known as the Queen Who Never Was because her father, the rightful heir to the throne, died, followed by his brother King Baelon, leaving King Jaehaerys I Targaryen to appoint a new successor. Prince Jacaerys Velaryon is the eldest son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and is second in line to the Iron Throne after his mother. Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock, Emma D'Arcy) is the first-born daughter of King Viserys Targaryen and Queen Aemma Arryn and is the King's only legitimate child at the start of the season. However, his final message - which had been intended for Rhaenyra - was instead said to Alicent, prompting her to seize the throne for their eldest son, Aegon. Viserys's father was Prince Baelon Targaryen, who had three children – Viserys, Daemon and Aegon, the latter of which died before he turned one year old. However, following Maegor's mysterious death, Aenys' son Jaehaerys claimed the throne after stoking rebellion against his tyrannical uncle.

However, Game of Thrones would not be the same without him ravishing the incorrect person. He is one of the most popular characters in the Mad King Game of Thrones family tree. As a result of his marriage to Jocelyn Baratheon, Aemon died before his father, leaving behind a daughter, Rhaenys Targaryen. The eldest is named after Aegon the Conquerer but could be considered a slight on Alicent's eldest son, while the younger Viserys is named after Rhaenyra's father and Daemon's brother, King Viserys. The Blackfyre family is a branch house of the Targaryens created when Aegon the Unworthy legitimized the bastard son Deamon he conceived with his sister Daena.
